So, kinda had a little freak out this morning when I walked in to see the room empty and the bed with fresh sheets…. They’d taken him to get more x-rays… 😏 He was showing improvement last night, though not so great when returned from x-rays. Still, the neurosurgeon doesn’t think surgery is needed!
I might have scolded him last night when I read a couple of his responses on fb, indicating his situation isn’t really that bad. Dude, you literally broke your neck—the t1 is cracked on *both* sides, a critical tendon compromised; you literally have a tube through your rib cage into your lung to assist reinflation; you literally have a tear in an artery behind your knee (though small, and his blood is pumping through very well—but will need blood thinners).
At the same time, it is literally a miracle the crushing of the spine and cracked vertebrae doesn’t seem to have impacted his spinal cord; and he does seem to be better (by better, I mean he has the strength to grasp the bed rail and scooch himself back an inch on his own…).
It will be a bit of a recovery, physical therapy, etc. And he still can’t stand up. But he will be able to soon.
I am acutely aware of what a gift that is.
We know so many who had amazing support systems, people in prayer—in fervent faith—and who do not regain complete health, or recover at all. At the same time, I know the power of community, the force that generates exponentially when two or more agree to extend love and concern beyond themselves and relinquish it to the Source of everything. There, freedom is. There, healing of all sorts is possible.
We are overwhelmed by how many—all of you!—who have responded and shared my post and are praying. It’s quite stunning, really, and is absolutely effective!
Howie might be able to come home tomorrow. He is strong and healthy, so he should recover well. There will be setbacks, and it will feel like an eternity before a full recovery is made. Those are the times he will especially need your prayers and love and support. And I have no doubt it will be in inestimable measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over into our laps!

Ok, so Howie was in a cycling accident today near Idaho Springs. He’s at St Anthony Hospital in Lakewood.  They did head to toe CT scans, X-rays, ultrasounds…. Has collapsed lung, inserted tube between ribs to attempt to reinflate—min of 48 hours in hospital. Fractured T1 vertebrae, compressed spine, massive hematoma in right distal thigh. MRI on head/spine to determine whether ligaments/tissue between vertebrae are affected, and if they need to do surgery.
Apparently there’s a little tear in the artery behind his left knee they just happened to see when scanning the right leg. Just keeping an eye on it to make sure it heals on its own, otherwise surgery to repair.
Getting a second look at spine in the morning, after all the specialists get results, confer, etc. Won't get more answers until morning.

When I have to ask my kid whether he is afraid whe

When I have to ask my kid whether he is afraid when he goes to school or out in neighborhood, just because he’s Asian... I lament.  
When I have conversation after conversation with my son in 3rd grade and 6th grade and every day in small-town-northern-Illinois, and today, about what it feels like to be called names, slurs typically ascribed to other ethnic Asian groups because, to the uninformed or monochromatic-social-experience ‘all Asians look alike’... I lament. 
When I preach about how Jesus came to show us how much God loves us *all* and that we are made to follow in the same way calling out injustices, examples of when humankind choose hate toward a group of humans based on how they look or speak or love—*over* love... and someone in the congregation sneers... as my teenaged son, faithful, sits in the front row... my heart breaks in a billion pieces... and I lament.

I don’t have the words. I just know that teenagers already have more than enough to contend with. And I keep thinking that we should be getting better at this. I strive to keep hope, but wow am I tired.
